Statistics Revision
Plan enquiries, evaluate data and use statistical methods to draw justified conclusions.
Revision topics
12 topicsStatistical enquiry and data
Define population and measurable hypothesis. Match collection and analysis to question.
Sampling and collecting data
Population target; frame identifies eligible members. Census attempts all; sample uses a subset.
Tables, charts and communication
Count, total and cross-classify accurately. A key defines the value of each symbol.
Distributions and statistical graphs
Boundaries depend on recording precision. Midpoints on x, class frequencies on y.
Averages
Mean uses all values: total ÷ count. Sort first; average two middle values if needed.
Spread and standardised scores
Range = maximum − minimum; sensitive to extremes. Ordered quarters; make the chosen convention clear.
Scatter diagrams and correlation
Plot paired explanatory and response values. Strength is closeness, not gradient.
Time series, index numbers and rates
Time on x; separate trend from noise. Seasonal calendar pattern; cycles less fixed.
Estimation and quality assurance
Sample proportion × population gives estimated count. Sample summaries estimate population characteristics.
Probability, experiments and risk
Probabilities from 0 to 1; chance is not certainty. Counting rule requires equally likely outcomes.
Combined events and conditional probability
Ordered outcomes can be equally likely while sums are not. No overlap differs from covering every outcome.
Binomial and normal distributions
Fixed n; independent two-outcome trials; constant p. Binomial counts are integers from 0 to n.

The course and your enquiry
Both calculator papers cover the full course at the chosen tier. Each lasts 90 minutes, carries 80 marks and contributes 50%. Foundation covers grades 1–5; Higher covers grades 4–9 with an allowed grade 3. Higher includes shared topics and labelled extensions. ST1–ST12 are site identifiers; all content is compulsory.
Work through a complete enquiry with real sourced data, justified methods, accurate graphs and contextual evaluation. The worked datasets illustrate methods; use the checklist tasks to demonstrate broader skills.
